Ganges River Health and Pollution Issues

A graduate of Boalt Hall, the University of California, Berkeley, law school, Paul Seeman formerly served as a superior court judge in Oakland, California. Maintaining an interest in international environmental law, Paul Seeman has worked with the Sankat Mochan Foundation in Varanasi, India, on a cleanup project of the Ganges River.

The Sankat Mochan Foundation was founded by Dr. Veer Bahdra Mishra, who was recognized on the United Nations Environmental Program's Global 500 Roll of Honour in 1992, and was a TIME Magazines "Hero of the Planet" recipient in 1999. The Foundation’s efforts to eliminate pollution in the Ganges include promoting an innovative wastewater management solution that would intercept and treat sewage from the city of Varanasi. They also conduct water quality research - the Swatcha Ganga Research Laboratory is the only laboratory in Varanasi regularly monitoring water quality. To support these efforts the Foundation also conducts public outreach campaigns informing the public about environmental awareness.
